A Case Study: Roche & 3DforScience
Roche, a global leader in biotechnology and ophthalmology research, partnered with 3DforScience to develop Eye Travel, a cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) experience designed to transform how healthcare professionals (HCPs) learn about age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The challenge: turn a complex biological process into an immersive educational journey that goes beyond traditional lectures or 2D visuals, one that engages, informs, and empowers.

Traditional training methods often struggle to convey the dynamic cellular processes behind diseases like AMD. Roche wanted a more engaging, experiential approach that could:
Visualize disease progression from the macroscopic to the microscopic level.
Provide interactive, decision-based learning, reinforcing real-world treatment implications.
Deliver a scalable format for global use: from congress installations to mobile and desktop adaptations.

To craft Eye Travel, 3DforScience combined cinematic aesthetics with molecular precision.
Our scientific animators and medical experts worked closely with Roche’s ophthalmology and medical affairs teams to ensure accuracy in every visual detail — from retinal vascular structures to the dual inhibition mechanism of faricimab.
Interactive design experts optimized the VR interface for both headset and desktop experiences, allowing the experience to adapt seamlessly to congress installations or digital events.
We began by immersing ourselves in Roche’s vision of transforming AMD education through virtual reality. Understanding the scientific foundations of faricimab’s dual mechanism of action and the learning challenges faced by ophthalmologists guided our creative direction. From there, we developed detailed storyboards and visual concepts that brought the inner structures of the eye to life. Each sequence was refined to balance cinematic immersion with scientific precision—ensuring that every visual moment reinforced Roche’s goal of turning complex retinal science into a compelling, interactive learning experience.

3DforScience designed Eye Travel, a fully interactive VR simulation that guides users from the surface of the eye down to the molecular level, a journey inspired by the Stargate sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Color, motion, and sound design combine to evoke a sense of awe while maintaining scientific accuracy. As the narrative unfolds, users “travel” into the eye, passing through the retina and blood vessels, to observe the progression of AMD and its effects on cellular health.
Ultimately, participants explore how faricimab restores balance by stabilizing vessel permeability and reducing inflammation, bringing clarity and calm back to the eye’s microenvironment.

Every stage of the Eye Travel VR experience was thoughtfully crafted to merge science, storytelling, and technology. From the first storyboards and environment design to 3D modeling of ocular anatomy and interactive development, our team collaborated closely with Roche’s medical and training experts. This ensured that every visual, movement, and decision point accurately represented AMD progression and treatment, delivering an experience that was both scientifically rigorous and engaging.

Eye Travel has been presented at medical congresses and Roche training sessions worldwide, redefining how retinal diseases are taught and understood.
The VR experience achieved outstanding feedback from healthcare professionals, who praised its clarity, realism, and emotional impact.
By merging scientific storytelling and immersive technology, Eye Travel positioned Roche as a pioneer in interactive medical education, helping clinicians not just learn about AMD — but see it in a way they never had before.
