A Case Study: Bayer & 3DforScience:
Bayer, a global leader in healthcare innovation, partnered with 3DforScience to elevate ophthalmology education for healthcare professionals. To achieve this, an interactive AR and VR experience was designed, putting users in the shoes of two real-life inspired patients living with Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This initiative aimed to foster deeper understanding and empathy for patients’ daily visual challenges while reinforcing knowledge about disease mechanisms and treatment strategies.
The experience guided participants through the daily routines of Roberto and Carmen, fictional but representative patient profiles. Viewers experienced first-hand the distortions, blind spots, and visual strain that DME and AMD cause.
Integrated animations clarified how VEGF pathways drive vascular leakage and neovascularization, and how treatment with anti-VEGF agents like aflibercept can mitigate progression.

To ensure medical accuracy and relatable storytelling, our team crafted realistic 360° environments combined with custom 3D animations of ocular signaling and pathology. The AR/VR interaction allowed HCPs to pause, explore, and visualize key molecular events like VEGF receptor binding and macular damage, all while maintaining an emotional narrative about the impact on daily life.
Starting from Bayer’s educational objectives, 3DforScience developed a user-friendly virtual interface, filmed real 360° scenes, and integrated detailed animations. Every narrative step, from supermarket aisles to city parks; was designed to blend patient perspective with clinical insight, maximizing engagement and knowledge retention.
By combining augmented reality, virtual reality, and cinematic storytelling, the Bayer experience broke new ground in HCP training.
Beyond facts and figures, participants walked away with a vivid memory of how vision loss alters independence and quality of life—empowering them to apply this empathy in patient care.

Close collaboration with Bayer’s teams ensured every aspect of the AR and VR experience aligned with clinical accuracy and brand messaging. Our process combined real 360° video shoots, interactive medical animations, voiceover integration, and UX design — all refined through iterative reviews to deliver an immersive, intuitive tool ready for workshops, events, and digital education.
The project succeeded in delivering an educational tool that goes beyond the conventional workshop. Bayer’s AR/VR module has since been used at training sessions, conferences, and internal learning events, helping professionals better understand the importance of early diagnosis, intensive treatment, and patient-centered care in managing DME and AMD.
“With this immersive experience, Bayer demonstrated how cutting-edge technology can humanize science and strengthen the connection between patient reality and clinical practice.”
