Discover in this article how we partnered with Alexion Pharmaceuticals, renowned for its innovations in complement biology since 1992 and now part of AstraZeneca, to create 3D animation videos for rare diseases and demystify Myasthenia Gravis (MG). This collaboration highlights the power of visual communication in simplifying complex medical conditions, enhancing patient and healthcare professional understanding of MG, and showcasing the potential of 3D animations in healthcare education.

About Alexion

CLIENT: Alexion, a pharmaceutical company that specializes in developing and commercializing treatments for rare diseases was founded in 1992 and acquired by AstraZeneca in 2021. Alexion is known for its pioneering work in complement biology, which has led to the development of life-saving treatments for conditions such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS).

SERVICE: As 3DforScience we worked together with Alexion to create a 3D animation video for Myasthenia Gravis (MG) an autoimmune disorder that affects synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction. This video aimed to help simplify complex medical concepts and provide a visual representation of conditions such as the production of anti-acetylcholine receptor autoantibodies that bind to acetylcholine receptors through a detailed process starting from a script to a visualization phase where we were able to highlight Alexion’s main objectives.

Some interesting facts about this disease:

      1. Self-Attack: The immune system goes rogue, weakening muscles at nerve junctions.
      2. Droopy Debut: Droopy eyelids, double vision, and slurred speech often hint at MG.
      3. Rest Replenishes: Weakness worsens with use, but rest brings temporary relief.
      4. Med Mix: Some meds boost muscle power, while others calm the immune attack.

The importance of accuracy and clarity in scientific animation

The significance of this project was its ability to educate patients and healthcare professionals about this rare autoimmune disease. The video showcased the underlying mechanisms of MG, including the malfunctioning neuromuscular junctions and the impact on muscle weakness. By visualizing these concepts, the video effectively conveyed the complexities of the condition in a simplified manner.

The animation team meticulously researched and referenced medical sources to ensure the accuracy of the information presented. This attention to detail was crucial in creating a video that could be relied upon as a trusted source of information. Our team also worked closely with medical professionals to ensure that the animation accurately represented the experiences of patients with MG.

3D animation videos for rare diseases. The benefits for patients and health professionals

The use of these scientific communication materials has numerous benefits for patients with conditions like Myasthenia Gravis. Firstly, it allows them to gain a better understanding of their condition by visualizing the underlying mechanisms and processes involved. This visual representation can help to demystify complex medical concepts and empower patients to take an active role in their care.

In addition, the video serves as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals who may encounter patients with MG. By providing an easily accessible and comprehensive overview of the condition, healthcare professionals can quickly familiarise themselves with the key aspects of MG, leading to more informed and efficient care for patients. The video can also be used as an educational tool in medical schools and training programs, further contributing to the dissemination of accurate information about MG.
