COVID-19 Testing Overview
COVID-19 had an enormous impact worldwide. A reliable testing strategy is needed so life can return to normal.
Two kinds of tests are available for COVID-19: viral tests and antibody tests.
- A viral test tells you if you have a current infection.
- An antibody test might tell you if you had a past infection.
Detecting the presence of viral RNA in body fluid gives a snapshot of a person’s current infection status. It doesn’t reveal information about past infection or future immunity because the RNA disappears when the patient recovers.
However, antibodies remain in the blood even after the recovery, so testing the antibodies can detect previous infections. However, only a subset of antibodies is capable of blocking future viral infection. These are called Neutralizing antibodies.
