Atrial fibrillation is a fast, irregular heart rate that can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. During atrial fibrillation, the two upper chambers -atria- of the heartbeat chaotically and irregularly, out of coordination with the two ventricles of the heart. Symptoms of atrial fibrillation generally include palpitations, shortness of breath, and weakness.
Episodes of atrial fibrillation may come and go, or there may be constant atrial fibrillation that may require treatment.
